I never take anything on my runs besides my watch, so I’m fine without them. The only need I see for them is if you have stuff you want to take with your like a phone or snack get, so I’d say it’s need specific.
Living in Miami I only use a running jacket a handful of mornings a year, so I'm probably not the best person to chime in, but I find that anything I carry on my run is better suited for zip or pouch pockets in the waist of my shorts than in the jacket. Items tend to bounce around for me if they're in the jacket pocket, but YMMV.
Another non-jacket-wearer chiming in... get whatever jacket you want and consider adding a running belt to fill in the role of your pockets.
My biggest concern with pockets on a jacket is how much things will bounce around. I always run with my phone and cannot say enough good things about my SPIbelt. It securely holds my phone and a pack or two of ClifBloks without any problem. I really have to be booking it (6:00/mile) in order to notice any bounce. For my slower runs, I don't even really notice it is there but it is really easy to access when needed.
I don't mind my running jackets having side pockets. I don't use them for stashing my running stuff though. I'll usually just use the pockets after or before the run to keep my hands warm or hold my keys (should I need to stop anywhere before or after the run). I own both types of jacket and my use just depends on a few things (where I'm running, what I'm doing after, & overall temperature).
