I'm beginning training for my first marathon--I think it will be LA in march. I'm 25 and I've been running seriously for years now (just not racing) and in the last year have really increased my mileage. I'm doing 4-5 runs per week. 1 long run of 15-20 miles and then 3 or 4 shorter runs 10-13 miles at a pace of a 7:50 mile. All my training thus far has been on treadmill to prevent stress on my knees. I realize I need to start doing some of my long runs outside. My problem is this--every training plan I encoutner for first time marathoners requires me to decrease my mileage. Is this really necessary if I've built up the stamina to do this many longer runs? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

No reason to drop you mileage if you're handling it well. Seems like you're looking at the wrong programs though. When a program says "beginning" marathon program, in most cases it means a person who in many cases is coming off the couch or who has very little background looking to just complete the distance.
Really, if you're running as much as you are now, a marathon in 4 months shouldn't be a big deal. Actually a marathon now shouldn't be a big deal. Just keep doing what you're doing, and you'll do great. Joe |

I cannot fathom running on a treadmill - bores the heck out of me.
